What Is Wheel-Lift Towing?

Wheel-lift towing uses hydraulic metal forks that slide under your vehicle's wheels, lifting either the front or rear axle off the ground while the other set of wheels rolls on the pavement. We position our truck, extend the wheel-lift apparatus, slide the forks under your tires, then hydraulically raise that end of your car about three feet up. The whole setup takes about five minutes once we're in position.

This method works great for most everyday passenger cars, SUVs, and light trucks with standard ground clearance. We lift from whichever end won't cause transmission damage — front-wheel-drive cars get lifted from the front, rear-wheel-drive from the back, and all-wheel-drive vehicles sometimes need special dollies under the rolling wheels to prevent drivetrain issues.

Our wheel-lift trucks are smaller and more maneuverable than flatbeds, so we can squeeze into tight parking lots, narrow driveways, and congested city streets where bigger equipment won't fit. The hydraulic system is surprisingly gentle — we're lifting by the tire contact patch, not grabbing anything on your car's undercarriage that might get damaged.

At AER Towing, our drivers check your owner's manual or call the shop if there's any question about the safest lift point for your specific vehicle. We've been doing this in Poway and the North Inland since 2012, and we know which cars have quirks. Every lift gets secured with safety chains as backup, and we do a final walk-around before rolling out to make sure everything's positioned correctly.

Quick Roadside Assistance

Wheel-lift is faster to set up than flatbed loading when you need to clear traffic quickly on busy North County roads.

Front-End Collision Damage

Cars with front-end damage often tow better with the damaged end lifted off the ground to prevent further scraping.

Flat Tire Emergency

We can lift the end with the flat tire to prevent rim damage during transport to your repair shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will wheel-lift towing damage my transmission?
Not if we lift from the correct end, which we always verify before hooking up. Front-wheel-drive cars get lifted from the front, rear-wheel-drive from the back. For all-wheel-drive vehicles, we use dollies under the rolling wheels or recommend flatbed service to be completely safe.
How do you know which end of my car to lift?
We check your owner's manual, look up your vehicle's drivetrain online, or call our shop if we're not certain. Our drivers have been doing this for years and know the common configurations for most makes and models. When in doubt, we always choose the safest option for your specific car.
Is wheel-lift safe for my car's suspension?
Yes, we're lifting by the tires themselves, not putting stress on suspension components. The hydraulic forks cradle your tires the same way a car lift does at a repair shop. We secure everything with safety chains and drive carefully to your destination.
Can you wheel-lift my car if it's really low to the ground?
If your car has been lowered or has a front air dam that hangs down, wheel-lift might cause scraping. We'll assess the clearance when we arrive and recommend flatbed service if there's any risk of damage to your vehicle.
